It’s been a minute since we heard something new from one of our favorite fair ladies of Britpop, Eliza Doolittle. The “Skinny Genes” star has been quiet for most of 2015 except for a brief kerfuffle when she, along with fellow collaborators Sam Smith and Disclosure, were sued by an unknown songwriter over the lyrics to the tracks from 2013’s chart-topping record, Settle. However, that the band has claimed the accusations are “completely false.”
Doolittle’s official website says she’s back in the studio with promises of more to come this year, but there’s already been talk of her record being pushed to 2016 to better synchronize with a potentially massive tour—so temper expectations accordingly. Her most recent record, 2013’s In Your Hands, failed to reach the same massive level of success as her debut, though her collaborations on the EDM scene have been well received. The sultry siren’s trademark blend of quirky pop songwriting and sweat-soaked club anthems has become a favorite among young lovers. This is apparent in a survey of Spotify users, which found the Flume remix of her Disclosure collaboration, “You & Me,” to be one of the top 10 tracks to make love to. The track reached number 10 on the UK charts and went all the way to number 2 in France.
The duo behind Disclosure hasn’t paid the aforementioned allegations much mind, as the two have been moving full steam ahead with plans for the latest record, titled Caracal. The group recently dropped the official music video for the new single, “Holdin’ On” featuring Grammy-winner Gregory Porter. Apparently, the video is but one of four upcoming videos that together will comprise a short film with the same title as the record. The music videos are directed by Ryan Hope, who filmed them in Mexico City. The director has previously done videos for 2 Chainz, Bombay Bicycle Club, and Sam Smith. The film was teased in a trailer that hit the web a few weeks ago, and now we know a little more.
The video takes place in a run-down, dystopian version of Mexico City that recalls the cyber-punk works of William Gibson or George Orwell. It chronicles the pursuit of a mysterious young girl who is tattooed with the face of the album’s namesake feline. The serial nature and larger scope of the videos bring to mind the initial four singles from another classic electronic dance record, Daft Punk’s landmark Discovery. Those four animated videos were later edited together into the feature film, “Interstella 5555,” directed by Japanese anime legend Leiji Matsumoto.
Disclosure’s sophomore album is slated for release on Sept. 25 and features collaborations with Nao, Sam Smith, Lion Babe, and Kwabs. There’s no word yet as to whether the group will resume its partnership with Doolittle for this project. However, if the success of “You & Me” is any indication, it would be a great idea.
